Steel Base Plate Preliminary Check

Check full-contact concrete bearing pressure and a simple cantilever-strip plate bending estimate for a rectangular steel base plate.

Bearing mechanicsFull-contact assumptionPlate strip estimate

Scope & assumptions

Rectangular plate with full compression contact and linear elastic pressure distribution from N, Mx and My. A simple one-way cantilever strip is used for plate bending.

Calculation basis

q = N/A ± 6Mx/(B·L²) ± 6My/(L·B²). Full contact requires qmin ≥ 0. Plate strip stress estimate: m = qmax·c²/2 and σ = 6m/t².
Important engineering note: If qmin < 0, partial contact/uplift occurs and this simple model is invalid. Anchor tension, concrete breakout, shear transfer, grout, prying, biaxial plate yield-line action and column-to-plate connection are not checked.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a complete code design?

No. It is a transparent preliminary calculation. Code-specific limits, detailing, stability and project conditions must be verified independently.

Can I use the result for construction?

Use the result as a screening or checking aid only. Final design and construction documents should be verified by a qualified professional where required.

Why are some resistance factors entered by the user?

Many design standards contain member-, material-, product- or project-specific values. Metric Republic keeps these visible and user-controlled instead of hiding assumptions.
